Hello,
I am troubleshooting a used Cedrus Lumina 3G controller and would appreciate any guidance from Cedrus or other users who may have encountered a similar problem.
Equipment:
Lumina 3G Controller
Serial number: 2529-3G
Firmware: 2.3.0
Xidon 2
New Cedrus Black Light Sensor
Sensor purchased directly from Cedrus under Order #37825
The Lumina is detected correctly in Xidon, and the firmware update to 2.3.0 completed successfully. I restored the factory defaults and configured the light sensor as follows:
Light Sensor enabled
Hold On: 5 ms
Hold Off: 5 ms
Single Shot disabled
“Send signal data via USB (onset & offset)” enabled
Sensitivity/threshold values can be changed and saved
The problem is that, with the Black Light Sensor plug completely inserted into the Light Sensor input, the Lumina does not detect any actual light transitions. I tested it using alternating full-screen black and white stimuli with the sensor placed directly over the changing area, but Xidon shows no Light Sensor ON/OFF events.
There is one unusual behavior:
If I insert the sensor plug quickly, the Light Sensor indicator may turn on briefly and then turn off.
If I insert the plug slowly and leave it partially inserted, the indicator may remain on.
Moving the partially inserted plug can generate rapid Light Sensor ON/OFF events.
However, the sensor cannot be used or configured reliably in that position because the connection is incomplete.
Once the plug is fully inserted, the indicator turns off and the Lumina does not respond to changes in brightness.
This appears to be an electrical contact response during insertion rather than true optical detection.
The Lumina itself communicates normally with the computer. Xidon recognizes it, the firmware and settings are retained, and USB communication is working. My separate Cedrus RB-834 also works normally in Xidon, so the issue appears isolated to the Lumina’s Light Sensor input, the sensor, or their compatibility.
Could Cedrus or anyone familiar with this hardware clarify the following?
1. Is the current Cedrus Black Light Sensor fully compatible with Lumina 3G serial number 2529-3G?
2. Were there different Lumina 3G hardware revisions requiring a different light sensor or connector?
3. Does this behavior suggest a damaged or worn Light Sensor jack, a cracked solder connection, or a defective sensor?
4. Is there a safe diagnostic procedure to distinguish between a faulty sensor and a faulty Lumina input?
5. Is there an official method for opening or servicing the Lumina 3G enclosure without damaging the sliding aluminum housing?
The Lumina was purchased used and listed as untested, while the Black Light Sensor is new and was purchased directly from Cedrus.
Thank you for any assistance.
